Institutions and Professions

Kettering studies the role in a democracy of specialized, highly skilled, often very technical professionals and of the institutions and organizations in which they function. In this research area, the foundation asks: in a global, expert-driven world, can citizens really do anything that will make a significant difference?

In addition to schools and government, other institutions affect the public’s ability to govern itself. These institutions—the media, higher education, philanthropic institutions, and NGOs—and the professions they rely on, can unintentionally weaken self-rule by rely on expert knowledge instead public knowledge or by not using civic action and public work to reinforce institutional action.

The Institutions, Professions and the Public program area is made up of four distinct subgroups:

Media and Democracy
Public Academy
Philanthropy in Democracy
NGOs and the Citizenry

In all of these subgroups, Kettering seeks to learn more about how professional and institutional routines affect the work of citizens and how these routines could better align with democratic practices.
