Media and Democracy

The influence of the media has an impact on democratic self-rule, so Kettering studies that impact from the perspective of both citizens and the media. The foundation also researches how professional routines of members of the media affect the work of citizens, including understanding what journalists think citizens can and should do, especially in relationship to the creation of public knowledge.

This research also tracks experiments to realign journalists’ routines with the democratic practices used in public work, and whether citizens are receptive to experiments with a more public friendly form of journalism.

In addition, Kettering remains open to research with journalists in other countries, including through the Fanning International Fellowship for Journalism and Democracy.

Journalism and Public Knowledge
The late Cole Campbell, dean of the Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism, University of Nevada, Reno, writes that journalists might ask themselves first, "how do communities recognize and respond to common challenges or opportunities—and how might they recognize and respond more effectively," and then "how does journalism help communities recognize and respond to common challenges and opportunities? How might it do so more effectively?" Download Campbell's article Journalism and Public Knowledge.

Beyond Manipulation: Democracy and Media
Noëlle McAfee argues that in a democracy “all who are affected by common matters have a voice in shaping those matters." She raises a key question, “can people use new media to create spaces that are more inclusive, or are they destined to repeat their polarization in cyberspace?” Download Beyond Manipulation.

Winter 2009 Review
The Winter 2009 issue of the Kettering Review focuses on the role of the media in a democracy and how journalists can unintentionally become obstacles to a public that wants to have a stronger hand in shaping its own future. Download the 2009 Winter Review.
