Sharon L. Davies on Courage, Faith, and Freedom
Three faith leaders were arrested yesterday, Monday, April 28, while peacefully protesting at the US Capitol, which should set off alarm bells, says Kettering Foundation President and CEO Sharon L. Davies. Davies joins host Brad Rourke to reflect on these arrests, which included Kettering Senior Fellow Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II. The arrests took place during the launch of Moral Mondays in DC, a series of demonstrations highlighting the disconnect between the Congressional budget and American values. Drawing a contrast between peaceful religious activism and violent insurrection, their conversation situates Barber’s action within the civil rights movement’s long tradition of faith leadership and civil disobedience.
Davies explores the moral imperative of protest, the deep courage required of faith leaders in public life, and the role of ordinary citizens in defending democracy.
