Community Impact Editor, Dayton Daily News and Cofounder, The Journalism Lab

Nick Hrkman is the community impact editor for the Dayton Daily News, a cofounder of The Journalism Lab, and a Kettering Foundation 2025 Dayton Democracy Fellow. In 2020, he and three other local journalists formed The Journalism Lab, a nonprofit organization that offers free instruction to those interested in becoming citizen journalists. The organization also works with refugee and student groups to help address media literacy and misinformation. In his role as community impact editor, Hrkman oversees the opinion section of the Dayton Daily News, Journal News, and Springfield News-Sun, which includes publishing guest columns and letters to the editor from area residents passionate about bettering their communities, as well as writes editorials on behalf of the publications. He is a firm believer in the important role the media plays in any healthy democracy and seeks to inform the public and foster discussion through opinion journalism that can help communities identify actionable solutions to key issues. Hrkman is a Dayton Public Schools graduate and recipient of the Dayton Daily News Si Burick Journalism Scholarship. He received a BS from the Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University.
