Flávia Pellegrino

Brazil

Flávia Pellegrino, from Brazil, is the executive director of Pacto pela Democracia (Pact for Democracy), a broad and cross-ideological coalition that orchestrates the pro-democracy ecosystem in Brazil in order to counter authoritarian threats, build more resilient democratic institutions, and protect democratic rule of law. Over the past decade, Pellegrino has built and coordinated networks within Brazilian civil society dedicated to important social and political causes, especially focused on defending democracy and human rights. She holds a degree in journalism from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo and a master’s degree in political science from the Institut des Hautes Études de l’Amérique Latine at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle. Pellegrino has become a key figure within the Brazilian pro-democracy movement, and, internationally, she has been engaged in different initiatives aimed at strengthening transnational cooperation on promoting democratic values, practices, and strategies to counter the current autocratization phenomenon worldwide. Such efforts include the Fisher Family Summer Fellows on Democracy and Development Program hosted by the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law at Stanford University and the Keseb Democracy Fellowship Program. Prior to her work in civil society organizations, Pellegrino worked as a journalist in Brazil and France, coordinated projects in the education sector, and taught politics at a popular prep school in São Paulo.
